Philadelphia Eagles 2018 Super Bowl Parade

With a thrilling 41-33 win in the Super Bowl LII (52), the Philadelphia Eagles took home their first Lombardi Trophy in team history!

The Eagles recently came off of a season where they lost a MVP caliber quarterback, a Hall of Fame left tackle, their starting middle linebacker,  a running back, and the best special teams player on the roster. Thus, claiming that they overcame adversity is definitely an understatement. Nick Foles, who started off the season as a backup, had to step up and play during the Week 14 game against the Rams after Carson Wentz tore his ACL. Foles led the Eagles to the Super Bowl, where he ultimately threw for 373 yards on 28 completions while also racking up three touchdowns.

Not only did the team overcome many injuries, but they also won the first Super Bowl in franchise history. They did this by beating the best quarterback and head coach duo to ever walk on a field. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady led the game with 505 yards in the air on 28 completions and three touchdowns.

Early in the second quarter Brady and the Patriots offense ran a trick play in which Brady ran out to catch a pass thrown from wide receiver Danny Amendola. Brady decided to be the, “average,” athlete that he is and not extend his arms, resulting in an unfortunate incompletion. Later in that quarter, with only 38 seconds remaining, the Eagles ran the, “Philly Special.” This play included Corey Clement having to take a direct snap while Foles went in motion towards a tight end position. Then, Clement was to run left, pitch the ball to Trey Burton, who would then throw the ball to Foles once more  in the end zone for a touchdown. This was carried out to completion.

After the franchise’s first Super Bowl win, Eagles fans took to the streets of Philadelphia. They went crazy,  ranging from throwing beer cans into crowds, to climbing light poles, and eventually standing on the Ritz Carlton’s awning until it collapsed in Center City. With the number of people that were celebrating that night, the city officials knew there would be a big turnout for the parade on February 8.

This past Thursday, the team and Eagles fans everywhere took to the street to celebrate something that fans have been waiting for for 57 years. The parade began at the sports complex in South Philly, and progressed all the way up through Broad Street, around City Hall, and eventually to the final destination of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

As the Eagles approached to the Rocky Steps, the crowd of an estimated three million people erupted singing the team fight song, “Fly Eagles Fly.” One man especially blew everyone away and completely stole the show. That man was Center Jason Kelce. Part of Kelce’s speech included the quote, “‘Any of you know who the biggest underdog is? It’s y’all, Philadelphia. For 52 years, y’all have been waiting for this. You want to talk about an underdog? You want to talk about a hungry dog? For 52 years you’ve been starved of this championship.'”

Kelce made headlines not only for his infamous rant on the stage, discussing underdogs and the media who didn’t think the Eagles had it in them, but also for what he was wearing, a Mummers costume. Senior Justin Zeiger commented on this whole process of events, saying, “The parade was insane, unlike anything I have ever seen before.”

Following the parade and festivities that go along with it, players made appearances on ESPN, Fox Sports 1, NFL Network, and other television networks to tell their side of the story and how surreal the moment has been.
