Super Bowl 52 Preview – Eagles vs. Patriots
January 28, 2018
Every year, on the first Sunday of February, the Vince Lombardi trophy is crowned to the team that survives the 16 game gauntlet of the regular season while managing to win enough games to make the playoffs, dominate the competition in the postseason, and make its way to the big game, and ultimately win it all.
This years’ final two teams are the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles. The Patriots are the heavily favored juggernaut looking to win their sixth Super Bowl in the last 13 years and cement their legacy as the greatest franchise in NFL History. Tom Brady is looking to win his 6th ring under legendary coach Bill Belichick. Their sixth Super Bowl win together would make them go down as the best QB-Coach duo in history. The Patriots have added many key additions that make them an even scarier team to face. Lets not forget they are the kings of the comeback. In last year’s Super Bowl, they infamously came back from a 28-3 deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons. In this year’s AFC Championship Game, the Pats were down to the Jaguars 20-10 in the fourth quarter, but found a way to storm down the field and convert on two straight touchdowns. If the Pats can pull it off again, Brady will have a VERY strong case to be called the greatest player to ever play the sport.
On the other side, the Philadelphia Eagles are looking to win their first ever Super Bowl. The Eagles looked like an unstoppable force during the regular season, winning 13 games and earning home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Their dominance was due in large part to their quarterback, second year man Carson Wentz, who did not undergo the “sophomore slump” that is usually endured, but instead had an MVP caliber season and was looking like the clear cut favorite to win the award. Wentz’s MVP hopes were cut short when he went down with a torn ACL in Week 14 vs the Rams. The injury would sideline Wentz for the rest of the season. Nick Foles has taken over and has had a nice postseason campaign. Foles has recaptured some of the magic he had in 2013, when he had a phenomenal season, tying the record for most touchdowns thrown in a single game (7). Foles vs Brady is a matchup that almost no one saw coming throughout the season, but the two quarterbacks will square off in the Super Bowl.
The Patriots boast a high-powered offense, locked and loaded with weapons all over the field for field general Tom Brady to throw to. Brandin Cooks was acquired from New Orleans this offseason, and all though he hasn’t been the game changer they hoped he would be, he has definitely made a big impact with his blazing speed and his poise when going up for tough catches. Danny Amendola has filled in for the injured Julian Edelman nicely, as he has opened up the field for Brady by running excellent routes and making great catches. Of course, the big tight end Rob Gronkowski is always a force to be reckoned with, as his combination of size, speed, and catching ability make him a huge danger to all defenses. The Patriots running back tandem of Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead will give the Patriots time to get the pass game going by mixing in runs early in the game, as well as test the Eagles defense to make tough stops. The Pats defense is also one that has some big names. Even though statistically the defense underperformed awfully, they have turned it up in the postseason and have turned offenses stagnant at times. A secondary led by rising stars Stephon Gilmore and Malcolm Butler, a linebacker core with guys like Trey Flowers, James Harrison and David Harris, and the trenches of the defensive line consisting of Eric Lee, Adam Butler, and Alan Branch, this Pats defense is a talented bnch. The Patriots just keep finding guys to fill in and play their role and keep the core guys together, and with the same strategy this year, they are looking to win their sixth Super Bowl title.
The Eagles have looked like the creme of the crop of the league this season, with an electric offense and a suffocating defense that can take on anyone in the league. Receivers Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor can make big time plays and will also provide safety options for Foles on key third down situations. Zach Ertz is always a reliable option at the tight end spot. The Eagles’ damage will come in the running game, where they have a three-headed monster of Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount, and Corey Clement. Ajayi and Blount platoon the first and second down snaps, and Corey Clement is the Eagles third down guy. The Eagles defense is one of the best in the league every year with studs such as Fletcher Cox on the defensive line as well as Ronald Darby and Malcom Jenkins in the secondary. If the Eagles can raise the banner, Philly will finally get that long awaited championship.
This game is also a revenge story, as in Super Bowl 39, Tom Brady’s first Super Bowl, the Patriots defeated the Eagles. This game will be one for the ages in Minneapolis.
