WHHS Spring Track is starting to wrap up its active season.

On May 9th and 10th, WHHS hosted the annual counties, in which the WHHS varsity girls team triumphed with a first place, and the varsity boys received an impressive fourth against all of the competing high schools of Passaic County. As usual the sporting events included sprinting, hurdles, throwing, jumping, pole vaulting, and distance heats.

Female runners Taylor Domico, Giuliana Guarino and Riley Brennan were able to snatch first places in their events, with Domico winning both the 1600 meters (1 mile) as well as 3200 meters (2 miles.) The girls scored a total of 101 points with a comfortable lead over the second place girl’s team from Clifton.

With girls upholding their county champs title second year in a row, the coaches are optimistic as both of the varsity teams continue heading forward into the bigger races. As sectionals approach, the team is focusing on their toughest competition.

“For the girls it’s Northern Highlands,” says Coach Staggers, “It’s a wide open field for the boys as far as sectionals go.”

While varsity looks forward to sectionals, JV and freshmen anxiously awaited their Championships, which were held on Friday May, 12 at Wayne Valley.

Sophomore Natalia Dominguez said, “I’m really excited for counties. I’m also a little bit nervous, but that’s normal before you race. I usually run the half mile.”

As the finish line draws nearer, Coach Staggers also hopes that the varsity teams will make it to the Big North Group championships which will begin on June 2nd, and end June 10th.

“Right now, that’s our long-term goal,” Staggers finished.
