College Football Week 3

The 2016-2017 college football season is in full swing as an interesting week 3 wrapped up.  Seven top 25 teams lost in Week 3 and three of them to unranked opponents.

#13 Iowa fell to North Dakota State, an FCS school.  Some are calling this the biggest upset since 2007 when Appalachian State beat Michigan.  As time expired, Cam Pederson kicked a 37 yard field goal through the uprights and the Bison beat the Hawkeyes 23-21.  It seems that North Dakota State is used to these big upsets, as they have beaten the last six FBS teams they have played.

In other action, Florida State and Louisville met at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.  Lamar Jackson led his 10th ranked Cardinals to an absolute thrashing of the 2nd ranked Seminoles.  The final score was 63-20.  Louisville put up the most points ever scored against Florida State as they embarrassed Jimbo Fisher and company.  Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson is number one on the Heisman watch with eighteen touchdowns in three games.

In the most anticipated game of the weekend, Alabama finally ended their 2 game skid against their rivals Ole Miss.  Ole Miss was up big, leading 24-3 until the two minute mark in the second quarter. Alabama scored to cut the deficit to 24-17 going into the half.  After that it was all Alabama.  Alabama’s quarterback Jalen Hurts led the team in rushing with 146 yards.  All of Alabama’s scores came on the ground as Damien Harris had 144 rush yards and a score and preseason Heisman watcher Bo Scarbrough added another score on the ground.  Heisman hopeful Chad Kelly will likely play the rest of his senior season with heart as he has certain NFL aspirations.

#3 Ohio State beat #14 Oklahoma.  This loss will crush the chances of Oklahoma making the playoff as they are 1-2. For Ohio State, this will add to their resume for the College Football Playoff Selection Committee .

#11 Texas lost to unranked Cal in an offensive shootout 50-43.   Notre Dame could not finish the comeback off against Michigan State, losing 36-28. This loss is a crucial blow for the Irish and their playoff chances are slim.  22 Oregon also fell to Nebraska 35-32.

While they could not finish the upset the Panthers of Georgia State gave #9 Wisconsin a battle, the Badgers won 23-17.  Tennessee, also, struggled against a Group of 5 team, Ohio, but eventually pulled away 28-19.

We surveyed 40 people about who they think will win the Heisman, and Lamar Jackson led the way with 17 of the 40 votes. who did you survey? Leonard Fournette and Deshaun Watson tied for second each with 6 votes.  Christian McCaffrey followed them, receiving 4 votes and in fourth, Jabrill Peppers and J.T. Barrett each had 3.  Lastly, with only one vote was  Greg Ward Jr.  Many people agree that if Lamar Jackson keeps this incredible pace going, he will be a sure favorite to win the Heisman.
